Movement Medicine®

Vital body, heart and mind

From the Conscious Dance Festival 2024 Photo: Madhugraph

Movement Medicine is a dance where naturally arising movements become one’s own medicine and healing force.

By moving the body with music and guidance, it promotes liberation of mind and body and enhances self-healing. Workshops and classes are held by certified teachers around the world, and anyone can participate regardless of experience, gender, or age. It is a dance that blends the characteristics of artistry, science, therapy, and shamanism, becoming a medicine for us living in the modern age.

About Movement Medicine

Movement Medicine is a body-based practice that uses natural movement to connect with inner resources, supporting healing, personal growth, and meaningful action. Often described as a form of “conscious dance” or “dance meditation,” it is a guided yet open practice in which each person discovers their own movement in response to music and facilitation. .

It was founded in the UK by Susannah & Ya’Acov Darlingkhan, and explores not only the inner world of the individual, but also relationships with others and with the wider world. Drawing from influences such as the 5Rhythms, Gestalt therapy, shamanic traditions, and neuroscience, the practice supports a deeper understanding of oneself and encourages bringing that awareness into everyday choices and actions.

“Movement” turns into “Medicine”

In Movement Medicine, everyone is considered a “dancer” by nature. By moving within simple guidance and music, thoughts, emotions, and imagination naturally reconnect with the body, allowing movement itself to become “medicine” — a source of healing and awareness.
Through the practice of Movement Medicine, experiences such as the following may arise:

  • Releasing emotions that may have been held or suppressed
  • Allowing unfinished experiences to come to resolution
  • Deepening self-awareness and cultivating greater self-acceptance
  • Supporting the courage to bring your intentions and visions into action

“Dancing Humans” as Revealed by Anthropology

As research in anthropology shows, dance does not belong to any specific culture or era. It is one of the oldest and most universal forms of human expression. From hunter-gatherer societies to agricultural communities, dance has been at the core of survival, social bonding, healing, rites of passage, and prayer.

Moving together and sharing rhythm are believed to have strengthened social cohesion, encouraged cooperative behavior, and supported human evolution. Movement Medicine is an attempt to bring this evolutionary heritage of the “dancing human” back into a modern context. Dancing can be understood not only as a form of expression, but also as a way to awaken the resilience, creativity, and sense of connection that are inherent in human beings.

Movement Medicine from the perspectives of science and evolution

Recent neuroscience has shown that moving the body has a direct impact on emotional regulation, stress resilience, and self-awareness.
In particular, it has been found that rhythmic movement and improvised dance in response to music help regulate the autonomic nervous system and cultivate a sense of safety and connection.
Before thought, the body senses the environment, responds, and learns. Movement works faster than words and directly engages our nervous system.
Movement Medicine is a practical approach based on these innate neurophysiological mechanisms, integrating the body, emotions, imagination, and social connection as one system.

Background of Morning Dance Online

From the Spring Equinox in 2020—March 20 to June 27—for 100 days, we held an online space to dance and pray for 15 minutes every morning from 7:00.
What we practiced there was the Movement Medicine Mesa Practice. Mesa Practice is a method in which, while moving, awareness is brought to the micro (the body itself, everything within the skin), the medio (the space around the body), and the macro (the world), grounding in “oneself here and now” while connecting to the surrounding world.

In recent times, each of us is being asked how we “respond” to the state of the world. This 100-day dance was our creative response to the situation brought about by COVID-19. It began with the intention that this short time in the morning would help each participant explore and express their own “response,” and it has since evolved into what continues today as “Morning Dance Online.”

Initiation – A Journey Through the 9 Cycles of Life

“Initiation” is a rite of passage — a process of reflecting on the journey of one’s life and reconnecting with the essence of who we are.

In this retreat, we journey through the nine life cycles — from conception to death — through dance, bringing new light to our personal life stories and opening space for rediscovery and renewal.

Over the course of nine days, we explore the nine cycles of life:
conception, birth, childhood, puberty, adolescence, adulthood, maturity, elderhood and death.
Through dance, we enter the landscapes and archetypes held within the first five cycles, acknowledging what has been, transforming what can be transformed, and learning from the themes and challenges carried within each stage of life. As we approach the transition from youth into maturity, we spend a day in a Mini Vision Quest — a time of quiet reflection and perspective, looking out across the landscape of our lives as they are now.
This retreat is an opportunity to reconnect with the uniqueness of your own life story, and to discover the peace, wisdom, and inner resources that live within it.

This course is a required course for participation in the Apprenticeship Program scheduled to take place in Japan and China in 2027.

What You Will Experience

Working with the past as a resource

Through movement, you will revisit experiences from childhood through young adulthood, bringing awareness to unresolved emotions and transforming them into supportive resources for the present.

Mini Vision Quest

A dedicated time of stillness to reflect on your life as a whole and to sense the direction you wish to move toward.

Engaging with endings — befriending death

By turning toward the reality of endings, you are invited to connect with the finite nature of life and bring clarity to what truly matters.

Moving through the process together

Within the presence of a group, you will explore your past, present, and future, deepening awareness through shared experience and relationship.

Key Elements of This Retreat

Reclaiming authorship of your life

Reframing past experiences not as limitations, but as sources of strength that can shape your future.

A new perspective on relationships

Exploring connections with family and significant others, and discovering pathways toward greater balance and understanding.

Integrating experience into meaning

Bringing coherence to your life experiences and integrating them into your own understanding and learning.

A body-based approach

Engaging not only through thought, but through the body, allowing for changes that are grounded in direct experience.

This course is also an important step and a required condition for participation in the “Apprenticeship Program” scheduled to be held in Japan and China in 2027. It is a retreat where you can encounter the depth of Movement Medicine. It is also recommended for those who are not necessarily interested in the Apprenticeship.

Upcoming Initiation

Scheduled to be held in China in September–October 2026; preparations are underway for an event to be held in Japan in May 2027.
Details will be announced shortly.

Movement Medicine Apprenticeship Program

This program is for those who want to practice Movement Medicine in their daily lives or who wish to teach Movement Medicine in the future.

This intensive program provides meticulous support and learning opportunities, including challenges, from apprentice leader who have gained experience under the guidance of founders Ya’Acov and Susanna. In this program, each participant views life itself as a “creative project” and discovers their own theme. For example, writing a book, finding a new direction in life, or deepening reconciliation with family. Within this program, participants learn how to practice and embody their discovered themes and dreams using the tools of Movement Medicine, guided by their own chosen themes and dreams. Here, participants gather like a tribe with apprentice leaders and fellow participants, supporting each other as they learn. Furthermore, participants become part of the global community of Movement Medicine, which comes from all over the world.

What We Value in This Program

  • Incorporating the practices and philosophy of movement medicine into daily life.
  • Embracing your “whole self,” including body, emotions, thoughts, and spirit.
  • Exploring your place in this world by gradually aligning your words and actions.
  • Living more deeply by accepting yourself as you are, rather than trying to become a perfect person.
  • Fostering a real community where you respect yourself, respect your peers, welcome differences, and support and learn from each other.
  • Maintaining a sense of humor to reflect on yourself without becoming overly serious, and listening to what you truly cherish in this life.
  • Having a perspective on the world we live in, and respecting the Earth not as a resource, but as an unique living organism.
